One summer’s night, playwright-lyricist Bob Strozier was feeling sorry for himself. “I had a few drinks too many,” he explains, “and ended up in front of a Broadway theater, where I noticed an attractive woman who was obviously meeting someone. She kept eyeing me, then finally came over and said, ‘Excuse me, are you Jerry?’ For a brief, inebriated moment, I almost said yes…then confessed that, no--alas--I wasn’t.”

But a play was born about a guy who--tipsy, dazed, and smitten--answers yes and, over the course of the evening, gets increasingly tangled up in his masquerade. That play, produced by the Workshop Theater Company in Manhattan, has evolved into a musical that’s now had three Workshop concert readings:
